The Vestibular System - the GPS of our bodies!

Vestibular regulation refers to activities that stimulate the vestibular system, which is responsible for our sense of balance and spatial orientation.

What will you see?

  • Gravitational insecurities - will become very upset when movement is forced on them
  • Movement intolerance - uncomfortable with fast movement or spinning
  • Craves spinning or swinging
  • Does not like feet off the ground - fearful of heights, fear of falling
  • Has difficulty standing still - is constantly moving (fidgets)
  • Prone to being carsick or motion sick - this can also manifest as falling asleep immediately in a car, bus, boat, or airplane)
  • Becomes dizzy easily, or never becomes dizzy ... that's a tricky one!

    What activities may help;

    Swinging: Swinging back and forth or side to side can provide vestibular input and help regulate the system

    Rolling: Rolling on the ground or on an exercise ball can also provide vestibular input and help with regulation.

    Spinning: Slow, controlled spinning can help with vestibular regulation, but it's important to avoid fast, uncontrolled spinning which can be dangerous.

    Jumping: Jumping activities, such as jumping jacks or jumping on a trampoline, can provide vestibular input and help regulate the system.

    Balancing: Balancing activities, such as standing on one foot or walking on a balance beam, can help with vestibular regulation.

    Yoga: Certain yoga poses, such as the tree pose or warrior pose, can provide vestibular input and help with regulation.

    Dancing: Dancing to music with movements that involve changes in direction or level can provide vestibular input and help with regulation.

    It's important to remember that the activities should be done safely and under supervision, especially for individuals with certain medical conditions or disabilities. It's also recommended to consult with a healthcare professional or occupational therapist for specific recommendations tailored to individual needs.
