Walking the Mornington Peninsula — and Why Access Matters

Recently, I had the privilege of experiencing something truly special: a three-day walk along the Mornington Peninsula, one of the most beautiful parts of Australia.
With a small group of six amazing people, we spent our days walking and talking, and our evenings enjoying well-earned rest. Over those three days, we covered an average of 15 kilometres a day, immersing ourselves in the breathtaking landscapes that make this region so unique.
Located just an hour south of Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula is renowned for its stunning beaches, world-class wineries, and incredible natural environments. While the full Mornington Peninsula Walk spans over 100 kilometres, our journey took us through lush forests, fern-filled glens, dramatic coastal scenery, and the iconic cliffs of Cape Schanck, where the historic lighthouse stands watch over the rugged coastline.
The itinerary struck a perfect balance between movement and relaxation. Each day brought new terrain and new sights — from shaded bushland trails to expansive ocean views. Every stretch of the walk highlighted a different aspect of the Peninsula’s diverse and remarkable environment.
So why am I sharing this?
As each day unfolded and the landscapes changed beneath our feet, I couldn’t help but reflect on how fortunate I am to have the physical and cognitive ability to experience something like this.
For many people living with disability or experiencing the impacts of ageing, this kind of access to nature, coastline, and community simply isn’t a given.
Standing on those clifftops and looking out across the ocean really brought home an important truth: not everyone has the same opportunity to connect with Australia’s incredible outdoors — and that’s something we should all be more mindful of.
