Happy New Year to all our wonderful customers and participants.

Welcome to our first blog for 2024!

What is reasonable and what is necessary when it comes to what NDIS funding can be used for?

This is an important question and one that we face daily with many of our customers/ participants. When we discuss product priority and suitability, I find myself unpacking the principles of what is reasonable and what is necessary.

What I have found is each person’s specific requirements can vary based on the type and severity of the disability, as well as the context in which support is needed. Here are some general principles that I like to use:

  1. Equal Opportunities: Support should be designed to provide individuals with disabilities the same opportunities as those without disabilities. This includes access to education, employment, healthcare, transportation, and other essential services.
  2. Accessibility: Ensuring physical and digital accessibility is crucial. This may involve ramps, elevators, accessible restrooms, and technologies such as screen readers for websites. It also extends to accessible formats for information, like braille or audio descriptions.
  3. Accommodations: Providing reasonable accommodations in the workplace, educational settings, and public spaces is essential. This could involve modifications to the physical environment, adjustments to work hours, or the use of assistive technologies.
  4. Inclusive Education: Educational institutions should strive to be inclusive, offering support services and accommodations to students with disabilities. This may include special education programs, accessible learning materials, and support from specialised educators.
  5. Social Inclusion: Society should promote social inclusion by fostering a culture that embraces diversity and discourages discrimination. This includes creating accessible public spaces and promoting positive attitudes toward people with disabilities.

Here is an excerpt from the NDIS site on what is considered Reasonable and Necessary supports.
